CULTURAL CAPITAL traces how the art world became an engine of gentrification in New York City—from the East Village of the 1980s, the battleground behind critic Rosalyn Deutsche’s landmark essay “The Fine Art of Gentrification,” to Chinatown today. The feature documentary brings together two generations of pioneering artists—from Martha Rosler, whose work has long trained a critical eye on New York’s shifting streets, to Ming Lin, co-founder of the nomadic Canal Street Research Association—alongside critics like Deutsche and Leah Pires, to reveal how artists past and present have pushed back against the forces reshaping the city.
